The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has started mailing refunds to people who received speeding citations from the automated speed enforcement camera located on the westbound side of MD Route 228 (Berry Road) in the Jenifer Elementary school zone between July 30, 2012 and July 31, 2013.
Last fall, during an internal audit of the automated speed enforcement program, it was noted that the speed camera at this particular site was not properly placed. The sheriff’s office immediately de-activated the camera and made a quick decision to refund the money to those who were issued tickets.
Refunds are being mailed this week to the vehicle owner or any other party who made official notification that they in fact were responsible for the violation and paid the fine. A total of 3,428 refunds are being issued at a cost of $137,280 which will be paid from revenues from the speed enforcement camera program.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is committed to the highest standards of automated enforcement to include providing the resources to audit and review the program on a constant basis.
