The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the recent hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian in a wheelchair and has received information indicating the vehicle may not have been white as originally reported.

The investigation began on Aug. 17 about 11 p.m., when the CCSO responded to the report of the crash, which occurred at the intersection of St. Charles Parkway and St. Thomas Drive in Waldorf. The preliminary investigation indicated the victim, a 35-year-old Waldorf man in a wheelchair, was attempting to cross the parkway when a vehicle struck him and fled the scene. Witnesses called 911. Police and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived on the scene and believed the victim’s injuries were possibly life-threatening. The victim was flown to Prince George’s Hospital Center, where remains in stable condition.

The CCSO’s Traffic Operations Unit is continuing to analyze evidence recovered at the scene, which suggests the vehicle may be a Ford. Witnesses initially described the vehicle as white but new leads suggest the vehicle may have been another color. The vehicle sustained damage to its front end rendering one of its headlights inoperative.

[blockquote]”It’s hard enough on family members when a loved one is injured in a crash but when the driver of the striking vehicle leaves the scene, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered and makes the experience even more painful than it needs to be. The person who was involved in this incident can still do the right thing and come forward.” – Sheriff Rex W. Coffey[/blockquote]

Anyone who knows of a vehicle with a recently shattered headlight or knows someone who replaced a headlight since the crash occurred and who suspects that the person who drives that vehicle might have been involved in the crash is encouraged to contact the CCSO or Charles County Crime Solvers. Citizens are also encouraged to contact the CCSO or Crime Solvers with any other information that might help identify the driver or the vehicle.
